Classe Mulet entered Negentropy during Campaign 82 because the campaign had reached a transportation problem that the Pipe Car could only solve on part of the map. The Pipe Car gave the Troubleshooters dependable local mobility and let them carry equipment farther than people on foot could reasonably manage, but its usefulness still depended upon roads, bridges, and ground that a wheeled vehicle could cross. A destroyed bridge or an impassable stretch of road could end a route even when the vehicle itself remained completely serviceable. I wanted Campaign 82 to open a much larger part of the continent, but I did not want to solve that problem by giving the players a machine that treated geography as an inconvenience. The physical world needed to continue shaping travel.
The great river system provided the answer. From the central interior, a crew could move along the Ohio and the river I called the Rapido, continue toward the lower river country, and eventually reach the Gulf. Rivers connected regions that had become difficult to join by land after the road network deteriorated, and they could carry far more equipment than a small overland vehicle. This changed the scale of the campaign immediately. A settlement hundreds of kilometers away could belong to the same continuing journey because the intervening waterway was usable, while places only a short distance inland could remain difficult to reach. Distance became a question of routes, channels, landings, weather, and local conditions instead of a simple measurement across the map.
The boat also gave travel an internal life. A long river journey did not have to disappear between one adventure and the next. The characters remained aboard the same vessel, lived beside the machinery that moved them, maintained equipment, watched the banks, listened to the radio, prepared for the next landing, and dealt with whatever the river itself presented. The journey could consume days without becoming empty time. That made the Mulet useful as a campaign device before I had worked out anything like the detailed industrial history the class eventually acquired.
The decisive idea was that the Mulet would carry the team's base with it. Earlier games had already shown me a recurring problem with fixed headquarters. Players are sensible about security. Once they acquire a building, supplies, tools, and a defensible position, improving that location becomes a rational use of their time. Every improvement then increases the cost of leaving. A headquarters created to support exploration can gradually become the place the campaign is organized around defending.
I did not want to solve that by attacking the headquarters whenever the players became comfortable. If the setting taught them that walls, stores, and workshops were useful, then punishing them for trusting those things would make the campaign fight its own logic. The Mulet offered another structure. The players could invest in a place, organize it, improve it, fill it with equipment, and still take that accumulated work downriver the next morning. Security and mobility could reinforce each other because the headquarters traveled with the expedition.
That changed the emotional texture of movement. Leaving a settlement no longer meant leaving the place where the team had arranged its tools, stored its spare parts, kept its records, charged its equipment, and learned where everything belonged. The same deck and machinery space remained underfoot after the landscape changed. A familiar working environment moved through unfamiliar country. The boat could become home without becoming a permanent refuge, because grounding, mechanical failure, low water, storms, hostile landings, and the simple fact that the river did not reach everywhere continued to impose limits.
The result was continuity. Damage suffered on one mission could still be present when the team reached the next town. A repair begun aboard could continue while the river carried them onward. Cargo acquired in one region could still be stacked against the same bulkhead days later. People along the route could recognize the vessel when it returned. The Troubleshooters were no longer a group that appeared at each location with an abstract inventory; they arrived aboard a specific boat whose condition and arrangement recorded part of the campaign's history.
One of the first things the Campaign 82 players did was put their Pipe Car on the Mulet's deck. That decision established the relationship between the two vehicles more clearly than any equipment table could have done. The boat handled long movement through the river system and carried the weight of the team's supplies. The Pipe Car extended operations inland after the boat reached a useful landing. Neither machine replaced the other. Together they formed a transportation system in which each vehicle covered the other's geographical weakness.
Carrying the Pipe Car turned the open deck into a working interface between river and land operations. The vehicle had to be secured against shifting while the Mulet maneuvered or encountered rough water, but it also had to remain accessible enough to unload without dismantling the entire deck arrangement. Cargo placement therefore affected future choices. A boat carrying tools, fuel, food, recovered material, scientific equipment, and a road vehicle could not be treated as an unlimited warehouse in which every object was instantly available. The players had to decide what stayed aboard, what was kept near the landing side, what could be buried under other cargo, and what actually went ashore for a mission.
That distinction became useful throughout play. The Mulet let the team possess more equipment than the characters could carry personally while preserving the practical consequences of leaving the boat. Specialized tools could remain close enough to be useful without appearing magically at every scene. A damaged item might have to wait until the characters returned to the vessel, where the proper tools and stable working space were available. The team gained a substantial logistical advantage, but the advantage had a location and therefore could still shape decisions.
The same arrangement made the Mulet a workshop. Repairs did not always require the Troubleshooters to locate a capable shop in whatever settlement happened to be nearby. They could carry tools, spare parts, measuring equipment, and materials with them and establish their own familiar work area aboard. The machinery that moved the vessel was physically present in that same environment, so propulsion, maintenance, cargo handling, and mission preparation became parts of one operating system. A mechanical problem was no longer an isolated encounter inserted by the Game Master. It could grow naturally from the fact that several people were living and working around a machine that ran for hours every day.
The players quickly connected the Mulet to the Project's electrical system. The Pipe Car might spend days sitting on deck while the boat covered distance, and those same days could be used to rebuild the car's battery reserve. The vessel already had an engine producing mechanical power. The players added battery chargers driven through a power takeoff so that some of that power could be converted into electricity while the boat was underway. The engine had to carry the additional load, so the energy was never free, but a river journey could now accomplish two jobs at once: move the team through the country and prepare the Pipe Car for the next inland mission.
That modification was important because it showed how I wanted Project technology to interact with the future world. The Troubleshooters did not need every useful machine to come from Dustin-Rhodes. Their advantage could come from understanding systems well enough to combine equipment built in different places and for different purposes. A local mechanical engine could support Project batteries. A future-world vessel could become part of the technological network the team had brought through the Cylinders. The Project equipment remained valuable, but its value increased when the players learned how to make local machinery support it.
The radios developed in the same way. A team radio carried ashore in a case was useful, but a vessel operating through a large river system could do more with permanently arranged communications. The boat offered a stable location for equipment, electrical power, and antennas mounted higher than a temporary ground installation usually allowed. Once the players began treating the radios as part of the vessel, the Mulet carried the team's communications position along with its tools and supplies. The Troubleshooters could listen while traveling, attempt contacts from the river, and arrive at a landing with their communications system already operating.
These changes made the boat increasingly specific to the team. The original hull supplied space and propulsion. The players supplied the configuration. Each modification answered a problem they had encountered during actual play, and the resulting vessel gradually became a record of their operating experience. I preferred that process to issuing them a finished Project river craft with every useful feature already installed. A complete vehicle would have answered many questions before the players ever had a reason to ask them. The Mulet became theirs because they discovered what it needed.
The players eventually described the Campaign 82 river adventures as a mixture of The African Queen and Apocalypse Now. The comparison captured the rhythm of play. The characters lived in close quarters with a machine they knew intimately while the river carried them toward places they did not know at all. The sound of the engine, the arrangement of the deck, the location of the tools, and the habits of the crew remained familiar. Every bend in the river could reveal a settlement, wreck, landing, tributary, political boundary, or local problem with no necessary resemblance to the last one.
That gave me a useful way to organize a large campaign without reducing travel to a sequence of compulsory stops. A river creates direction, but it also creates choices. The players decide where to land, which tributary to follow, how long to remain, when to turn back, and whether a place seen from the channel is worth investigating. The route concentrates movement enough that the Game Master can understand the country ahead, while side channels and shore expeditions keep the journey open. The river becomes a campaign spine without functioning like a corridor of rooms.
The Ohio was particularly useful because its changing political landscape could emerge gradually through play. Moving east could carry the crew away from places where Imperial influence was familiar and into districts where that authority weakened, local arrangements became more important, and the assumptions that worked at the previous landing no longer held. No painted border was required. The condition of a dock, the language used in trade, the presence or absence of officials, the quality of local records, and the reaction to a vessel arriving from farther west could show the change. The modern Classe Mulet adventure Down Ohio Way develops this idea much further, but its foundation is the same river experience from Campaign 82.
The Rapido performed a related function in the interior. It connected large stretches of the central plains through a route capable of carrying the team's accumulated equipment. The Troubleshooters could move substantial loads without hauling every kilogram across every kilometer of land, and the long voyage still gave them useful time for maintenance, study, planning, communications, and recovery. This allowed the setting to remain physically large without forcing the campaign to treat the country between major locations as empty.
The Gulf formed a natural edge to this system. I never wanted the Mulet to become a casual ocean-going vessel because open water should introduce a different class of problem. The modern vessel preserves that limit through its shallow hull, low freeboard, and exposed sternwheel. A careful crew can travel along sheltered coasts, behind barrier islands, through sounds and estuaries, and between river systems where protected water connects them. The boat can therefore range much farther than a purely river-bound craft while still requiring judgment about weather, exposure, and route. Geography remains part of the game even after the characters acquire excellent transportation.
Long-term use of the Mulet forced the players to think about habitation as part of operations. A completely open working deck is wonderfully flexible when the boat is carrying cargo, vehicles, salvage, or mission equipment, but several people living aboard for weeks need places to sleep, eat, store personal gear, keep records dry, and conduct ordinary work. Permanent cabins could solve those problems at the cost of consuming space that the next mission might need. The best arrangements were therefore adaptable. Sleeping and domestic space existed, but the boat could be reconfigured when another job demanded the room.
That principle eventually became the modern Expedition House package. Its fittings acknowledge that a working boat can also be a home while preserving the ability to clear space for another purpose. The modern design is much more developed than anything I had specified in 1982, but it follows the same campaign logic. Habitation was one use of the vessel's interior among several, and good design made it possible to shift between them.
Living aboard also kept the crew close to the machinery. The engine was part of their environment, not an abstract statistic. Noise, heat, maintenance, fuel, vibration, and access to working components affected daily life. A propulsion problem could emerge during an ordinary voyage because the characters were operating the machine continuously, and repairing it could require reorganizing the same space where people had been eating or sleeping. This helped technical activity become part of the campaign's ordinary texture instead of a specialized scene reserved for the engineer.
The boat's vulnerability was equally important. A mobile base still had to survive the world through which it moved. A changing channel could leave it grounded. A damaged part could stop the campaign's transportation system until the crew found a repair. Low water could close a route that had been open earlier in the season. A hostile landing could threaten the vessel while part of the team was ashore. These possibilities gave the players reasons to protect and maintain the Mulet without turning protection into permanent residence behind fixed walls. They could care deeply about the headquarters and still keep moving.
The modern Classe Mulet sourcebook gives the vessel an Imperial manufacturing history centered on Porte-la-Terre, standardized machinery, a shallow-draft hull, a broad working deck, and a long service life supported by repair and modification. None of that complete industrial history existed when Campaign 82 began. It grew later around the qualities that had made the original campaign boat useful. The class had to be simple enough to repair, open enough to adapt, and standardized enough that an old hull could remain useful after its original machinery and fittings had been replaced.
The engine-driven dynamo package is one of the clearest survivals of Campaign 82. In the modern design, mechanical power from the main engine can drive a dynamo and provide electrical power while the vessel operates, with later arrangements allowing the generator to be disconnected when the load is unnecessary. That formal package preserves the practical discovery the players had already made when they installed chargers for the Pipe Car. A running boat engine could become an electrical resource for the entire team.
The Expedition House preserves another campaign lesson, and the class's broad range of later modifications extends the same principle. Towing gear, workshops, passenger fittings, diving equipment, salvage machinery, electrical generation, security equipment, and other packages all treat the hull as a platform that can change during its service life. This was the quality I needed from the beginning. A vessel that could not change would become less interesting every time the players learned something new about how they wanted to operate.
The class also preserved the relationship with the Pipe Car. The Mulet never made the land vehicle obsolete because each machine solved a different geographical problem. The boat carried the car through country the car could not conveniently cross, then the car carried the Troubleshooters beyond the reach of the river. That became a broader design lesson for Negentropy equipment. A new tool can increase the usefulness of an older one when the two are allowed to work as a system.
Campaign 82 became broader because the Mulet let the players travel through a large setting without surrendering the logistical structure they had already built. Their tools, radios, spare parts, stores, records, workshop, Pipe Car, and accumulated modifications remained with them as the political and physical landscape changed. The team could carry its competence into unfamiliar country instead of rebuilding its operating base at every destination.
That continuity also gave the vessel an identity of its own. A return journey could bring the same hull back to a familiar landing with new fittings, different cargo, repaired damage, or another machine lashed to the deck. People could recognize the boat before they recognized everyone aboard it. The team's history became visible in an object that traveled with them, and the Mulet could acquire a reputation along the river in much the same way the Troubleshooters did.
This is why Classe Mulet survived beyond the campaign that created it. The boat solved a game problem by turning headquarters, transportation, workshop, power source, communications station, storehouse, and living space into different uses of the same moving platform. The players could invest in their base and then take that investment toward the next adventure. Every improvement gave them another reason to keep the vessel operating, and keeping it operating carried them farther into the world.
